Joeys

The Joeys class is aimed at children aged 18 months to approximately 2.5 years of age. The Joeys class aims to introduce toddlers and their parents/carers into gymnastics by keeping them as active as possible. Toddlers can access a variety of apparatus under the supervision of the instructor. They will learn basic gymnastics skills, body control such as gross motor skills, co-ordination and balance, as well as develop their confidence.

In order to get the most out of the session, parents/carers are encouraged to be active with their toddlers and use all the apparatus while waiting for their turn with the instructor. At this age, a very hands-on approach is taken, putting the children into the correct positions and guiding them through skills so that they learn the correct patterns of movement before progressing to performing skills independently.

There is also a focus on the personal development of the toddler, their language and communication skills as well as their understanding of simple counting. This is achieved by the way in which the instructor interacts with the toddler, teaching gymnastics through fun and games. These are all transferable skills and are not only vital to gymnastics but also in other areas of life.

Kangaroos

The Kangaroos class is aimed at children aged 2.5 - 3 years old. The Kangaroos class maintains the same philosophy as that in the Joeys. The physical, personal and social development of the child as well as their language, communication and basic mathematical skills is achieved through the discipline of gymnastics.

Children can access a variety of apparatus with the instructor learning basic gymnastics skills such as body control (fine motor skills), co-ordination and balance. Parents/carers are encouraged to be active with their toddlers and use all the apparatus while waiting for their turn with the instructor in order to get the most out of the session.

At this age a very hands-on approach is taken, putting the children into the correct positions and guiding them through skills so that they learn the correct patterns of movement, before progressing to perform skills independently. Skills in the class are progressions from those taught in the Joeys and provide foundations for those skills that are taught in the Koalas and Level 1 class. The warm up is more active and requires the children to contribute imaginatively. Games at the end involve more instructions and will be a little more challenging as a result.

Koalas

The Koalas class is aimed at children aged 3 years old and sees them through until they start Reception. In the Koalas class, children are not accompanied by their parents/carers. The lesson is entirely instructor led and completely structured but parents are able to watch from the cafe.

The Koalas class maintains the same philosophy as that in the Joeys and Kangaroos classes. The physical development of the child, along with their personal and social growth as well as the development of their language, communication and understanding of basic mathematics is achieved through the discipline of gymnastics.

Children are taken onto three to four apparatuses each week where the instructor teaches basic gymnastics skills, body control such as fine motor skills, co-ordination and balance, developing their confidence. At this age a very hands-on approach is taken, putting the children into the correct positions and guiding them through skills so that they learn the correct patterns of movement, before progressing to do skills on their own.

Skills in the class are progressions from those taught in the Joeys and Kangaroos and help strengthen the foundations for those skills that are taught in the Level 1 class. The warm up is structured and more active and requires the children to copy and repeat specific body movements. Children will learn new terminology and their ability to understand and copy instructions will improve.

Level 1

Level 1 is designed for children in Reception and Year 1. The Level 1 class maintains the same philosophy as in the Koalas class in which the physical development of the child, along with their personal and social growth, as well as the development of their language, communication and understanding of basic mathematics is achieved through the discipline of gymnastics.

Children are taken onto three to four apparatuses each week, where the instructor teaches basic gymnastics skills including body control such as gross motor skills, co-ordination and balance. Skills in this class are progressions from those taught in the Koalas and multiple techniques and body movements are combined to form new, more complicated skills that require more balance, strength, flexibility and co-ordination. Although a hands-on approach will still be taken in order for the individual to progress to more advanced skills, children will now also be encouraged to perform basic skills independently.

Nathan Mullett is the head coach and owner of Vale Gymnastics. Nathan started gymnastics at age 6, immediately fell in love with the sport and was selected for the club squad. By age 7 Nathan was training 20 hours each week under the guidance of Collin Buffin and Peter Haysham, who is the Welsh Nation Coach. Over the next few years he went on to win the Welsh Championships each year and picked up bronze and silver medals in the British championships.

At Age 14, Nathan was selected to represent Britain in a 4-way international competition held in Switzerland, and his career highlights were representing Wales in the Junior Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia as well as becoming the British Under 16 High Bar Gold medallist beating the likes of Max Whitlock and Louis Smith.
